Many ask: why dig in the garden if you can buy everything in supermarkets, even exotic vegetables and fruits? The question is naive, because after the flood of information we receive from TV screens, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet, just looking at these glossy fruits makes you wonder how much chemicals are packed into them, making them look so beautiful?

Let the carrot or potato grown on your own garden look somewhat unattractive, but they possess the most valuable quality in our time ─ they are ecologically clean. That means you can safely feed your family, children, and grandchildren with them. This is another incentive for those who love working with the land.

Autumn garden work

Autumn for gardeners ─ time to harvest the fruits of their labor, but not only: there is a whole range of crops that should be planted specifically in the fall. So, once the harvest is in, there is no dead season, just a new stage of the farming year. Properly completing all tasks will be helped by advice for gardeners in October.

In advance, plan what to plant in the fall in the garden, then apply fertilizers, till the beds, and loosen the soil. It should be noted that planting in winter is possible only on cultivated, light soils with little clay, otherwise, in spring, the soil will flood from rain and floodwaters, and the seedlings may die.

The favorable time for planting in the middle belt is the end of September to the beginning of October, but on the south it can last until mid-October. If you properly observe the timing and rules for planting in the fall in the garden, the plants will survive the winter and allow you to harvest a few weeks earlier.

The number of crops that can be planted in your garden in the fall is not so small: garlic, carrots, beets, dill, leafy parsley, pastinaca, sorrel, Physalis, onion-cherinushka, and others. To ensure your plantings survive the winter and give a good harvest, follow these rules:

  • The optimal temperature for planting vegetables in the fall is +3-5 degrees Celsius with frosts at night.
  • On the chosen planting site, water should not stagnate in spring and autumn, and in winter, wind should not blow snow off.
  • Take about 20-25% more seeds than usual for planting.
  • After planting, cover the seeds with a mixture of peat and compost, then cover with straw or hay.
