Choosing the material
The first step in solving the problem of how to cover a door — selecting and purchasing the covering material. The most popular and optimal option today is dermantine — artificial leather. It consists of cotton fabric and has a nitrocellulose coating. Dermantine has several positive characteristics:
- Long service life without loss of attractive appearance — up to 10 years;
- Resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations;
- Sound- and thermal insulation properties;
- Accessible price category.
How to properly cover a wooden door?
Before starting work, it is important that the covering material's dimensions are slightly larger than the door panel's dimensions, i.e., they form a reserve. For wooden panels, the reserve should be no less than 15 cm, for metal ones — 10 cm. Additional material will also be needed to make the bumpers around the door. Such elements are needed to conceal gaps between the frame and the door itself. Dermantine is the outer shell of the bumpers, whose size varies from 10 to 15 cm. Inside, a special insulating material (polyurethane foam, isolontape) 8-10 cm wide is used. The covering process is carried out using:
- Scissors;
- Knife;
- Screwdriver;
- Pliers;
- Fastening elements — decorative-headed nails;
- Hammer;
- Stapler;
- Adhesive.
Before beginning to cover the door panel, for convenience, it should be removed from hinges, disassembled handles and locking mechanisms. Then, prepare the surface — remove all old coverings, sand all irregularities with sandpaper. After completing all these steps, you can proceed to the main actions. It is recommended to start with the inner side of the door:
- First, attach decorative bumpers around the entire door panel (start from the top corner on the side where hinges are located). The protrusion of bumpers beyond the edge of the panel should not exceed 3 cm;
- Then attach the insulating material (foam or isolontape) to the door panel. Choose its size so that it lies evenly between bumpers and leaves a 1 cm free margin from each edge of the door. Attachment of insulation is done using a construction stapler;
- Next, you can proceed to attaching the dermantine. This is done as follows: the covering material is folded over the edges by 5-6 cm and applied to the door surface. The first decorative nail is hammered first in one top corner at a distance of about 7 mm from the edge, then in the second. Then decorative nails are hammered along the entire top edge of the door panel at intervals of 10-12 cm. Similar actions need to be performed on the lower side of the door. Then nails need to be hammered along the side edges with the same spacing — 10-12 cm;
- Once all fastening elements around the panel are secured, you can start decorating the rest of the surface. Using decorative-headed nails, you can create any pattern you like.
When the inner side is covered, you can proceed to finish the outer side of the door. This is done in a similar manner. The only difference — bumpers need to be attached to the door frame (on the left, right, and top parts). On the door panel, only the bottom bumper is attached. The final stage, when both sides are covered — reinstalling handles and locking mechanisms, hanging the door on hinges.
How to cover a metal door?
This type of door is rarely covered, as they are more visually appealing than wooden ones. Often, restoration is applied to their inner side. Covering entry metal doors differs in the method of material attachment — instead of decorative-headed nails, adhesive is used. Another difference — no bumper is needed around the perimeter. The sequence of actions is as follows:
- First, apply adhesive evenly over the entire surface of the door panel;
- Then attach the insulating material (foam or isolontape) and press it down;
- Carefully trim any excess insulation using scissors, and cut holes for handles, lock, and peephole using a knife;
- Next, cover the surface of the insulating material with adhesive, fold the edges, and apply the dermantine;
- The final step — reinstall the hardware and locking mechanisms.
What to do with worn covering material?
Restoration of entry doors already covered with dermantine does not always require replacing the material with a new one. You can remove scratches and scuffs and refresh the old covering using special coloring compounds. This restoration option will take less time and require fewer financial expenses. Acrylic paint and leather paint are suitable as coloring agents. All of them adhere well to dermantine, remain for a long time without fading or peeling.
