Want to give a loved one an entire world? With rocks and forests, flowers and meadows. A florarium is exactly what you need in such a case: practical, compact, and enchanting. Living landscapes behind glass will bring joy and decorate the space. They may remind you of places where you were happy, or promise new travels and discoveries.
You can buy a florarium on Crafta.ua or compose compositions from succulents yourself, if you have a little time, inspiration, and a creative mood. And for this, you don’t even need to be a master glassblower or have a diploma in horticultural design.
You need to gather:
- Idea
- Transparent glass or plastic container
- Plants
- Drainage mix
- Charcoal
- Soil or sand
- Tools
- Water
- Decor (pebbles, shells)
So, to create an ecosystem, you first need to decide on the idea and theme. Whether you'll recreate tropics, a desert, a lake, or a mountain stream, this will determine the selection of plants, decor, and container.
Let's start with the container. Mini-gardens are grown in flasks, cubes, icosahedrons, pyramids, droplets, glasses, light bulbs, spheres, and any other glass vessels. You can also use concrete planters. The main thing is to thoroughly wash, disinfect, and degrease them before use. For semi-desert plants, wide aquariums with low rims are better. For a humid tropical forest, you need a sufficiently large container of any shape, while mountain landscapes look more striking in tall vessels.
And if you want to be very original, you can create your garden in containers that, at first glance, are not suitable for this purpose:
- bottles with landscapes of resort areas around the world,
- soup bowls with echeverias instead of broccoli,
- wooden stumps that seem to suddenly bloom in spring,
- cups with plants that you can present instead of morning tea or coffee and make a surprise.
Flora and decor. To imitate a mini-desert, get various succulents and cacti, add crassulas, milkweeds, and stapelias. Decorate with gravel, sand, and small stones.
In jungles, plant marantas, fittonias, ferns, and arrange them in several layers for authenticity. Add mysterious-shaped roots, and your forest will come alive, like in a well-known fairy tale.
Rocks and grottos will be an excellent base for vertical rocky compositions, and with a little ingenuity, you can even create a mini-water world with lakes, floating hyacinths, and dwarf water lilies.
Algorithm of actions for creating a florarium is simple:
- Fill the prepared container with charcoal or regular activated charcoal.
- Add the required amount of fertile soil.
- Plant the flowers.
- Water everything with a spray bottle.
- Wipe the container walls and cover with a lid.
Done, the ecosystem is ready to be sent to its owner and to delight them for many years, reminding them of your love.
