Mineral fertilizers differ from organic ones in that they have an inorganic origin. They are widely used in home gardening and industrial-scale agriculture, as they are more affordable, act faster, and are less demanding.

Types and Characteristics of Mineral Fertilizers

Globally, there are only two types of mineral fertilizers: simple and complex. The first contain only one component, while the latter contain two or more. Each type has its own subtypes, which we will discuss in more detail.

Simple:

  • Nitrogen-based. They have excellent diffusion properties and dissolve well in water. This type of simple mineral fertilizer is usually applied before spring plowing, but this depends on regional climatic conditions and soil requirements.
  • Potassium-based. They are mined from natural deposits and are suitable for all soil types. Potassium is especially valued by agronomists for its ability to transport sugar through plant tissues, nourishing each cell and promoting the maturation of tasty fruits.
  • Phosphorus-based. In simple terms, these are mineral fertilizers and salts that are the main source of nutrition for all plants. Phosphorus is part of DNA, RNA, and many other substances necessary for full growth and development of organisms.

Complex fertilizers are divided by the number of microelements and production method. Among the most common types are: ammonium phosphate, nitrophosphate, diammonium phosphate. Always read the instructions for use. If the manufacturer does not provide information, it is easy to find it independently online.

Expert Tips for Proper Fertilizer Use:

  • Storage of chemical fertilizers is only in vacuum packaging and in inaccessible places, avoiding direct sunlight.
  • If fertilization is applied through the soil, try to avoid direct contact of the fertilizer with vegetative parts of the plant.
  • Liquid mineral fertilizers act much faster and are better absorbed.
  • Dry mineral fertilizers should be applied to moist soil (to dilute the concentrated fertilizer).
  • For a good harvest, we recommend alternating mineral fertilizers with organic ones.
