Oil Heater or Convector – Which is Better?
Oil heaters and convector heaters are the most popular, and it is precisely between these two that most buyers struggle when choosing.
Everyone in Russia is accustomed to the fact that even with the presence of a central heating system, during spring and autumn, one must take care of warmth in an apartment or office independently, which is why various electric heaters enjoy steady, though seasonally dependent, demand.
Oil heaters and convector heaters are the most popular, and it is precisely between these two that most buyers struggle when choosing. Let's examine the features, advantages, and disadvantages of these devices in detail and determine which is better.
Convector
Working Principle
As the name suggests, a convector operates by convection—the natural movement of air, where warm air rises toward the ceiling, and cold air sinks toward the floor.
Diagrammatically, the convector consists of an open finned heating element, a protective casing (housing), a thermostat that monitors the device's temperature and the ambient environment, a temperature control knob, and a power cord connecting to a standard electrical outlet.
It operates as follows: the desired temperature is set using the control knob, and then the heating element activates. The air nearby heats up and rises, thereby allowing colder air to take its place. Heat from the convector spreads throughout the room. Once the room reaches the desired temperature, the device automatically stops heating. It automatically resumes heating when the ambient temperature falls below the set point.
In most cases, such heaters are mounted on walls. On one hand, this allows them to blend well with the interior design, while on the other hand, it deprives the owner of the ability to move the heater closer to their workspace or resting area. There are also mobile models equipped with convenient wheels, but they are far less common.

As usual, when choosing, it is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of the devices. The convector's list is as follows.
Advantages:
- presence of a decorative protective casing,
- low operating temperature (around 60 degrees),
- lower energy consumption,
- quicker room heating,
- silent operation.
Regarding disadvantages, there are only two, but they are often decisive:
- require wall mounting,
- higher price compared to oil heaters.

Working Principle
The main difference between an oil heater and a convector lies in the presence of an oil radiator, within which a heating element (heating coil) is concealed. Accordingly, the coil first heats the oil, then heat spreads through the metal radiator casing and is then transferred to the air.
Otherwise, the operating principle, namely the spread of heat throughout the room and the maintenance of the set temperature using an internal thermostat, is identical to that of a convector. However, there are a few important differences.
First, oil models rarely have protection, which means there is always a risk of burning oneself on the hot radiator fins.
Second, oil heats up slowly, so some electrical energy is always wasted in transferring heat from one medium to another (heating coil — oil — metal — air), meaning it takes longer for the room to warm up from the moment the device is turned on.
In addition, oil heaters always have a mobile construction, meaning they can be moved closer, but the presence of a "foreign" object in the middle of the room, spoiling the entire interior, will not please everyone.
Another feature applies only to some models. Some are equipped with a small fan to speed up heat distribution, but in exchange for faster room heating, there is noise.

Let us list the advantages and disadvantages for these devices, as well as their differences from the previous type of heaters.
Advantages:
- mobility,
- easy installation,
- quiet operation (for standard models without a fan),
- low price.
Disadvantages:
- high radiator temperature (up to 95 degrees),
- lower energy efficiency,
- longer room heating time.
Conclusion: Which device is better?
It should be noted that both types enjoy approximately equal demand, so it is difficult to definitively declare one type of heater superior to the other. It is far more sensible to make a choice based on your own needs and capabilities.
For occasional use in your own home and, even more so, in an office, convector heaters are better suited—simply mount them on the wall once and turn them on as needed. Moreover, their design is quite versatile and fits well into almost any interior. The higher price is offset by ease of use and safety, which is especially important if there are children in the house.
For those who are forced to move frequently or simply prefer to have a warm heater always "right beside them," oil heaters are much better suited. Moreover, they are cheaper, and during periods of inactivity, they can be stored away, freeing up some space in the room.
