Cucumber Secrets – How to Harvest a Bountiful Cucumber Crop

When deciding to buy cucumber seeds, no gardener or entrepreneur will be left in the red. Cucumbers are a fairly low-maintenance and well-adapted vegetable crop to natural conditions. With simple but proper care, you will get a harvest of juicy and aromatic fruits that can be sold. Most varieties are also versatile in use: housewives pickle them, can them, or add them fresh to dishes. However, when deciding to order cucumber seeds, you need to become familiar with the characteristics of these vegetables.

Which cucumber seeds to choose

Currently, there is an incredible variety of seed types on the market to suit any taste. Even the most discerning gourmet can find their ideal variety. To avoid being overwhelmed by such a variety of cucumber seeds, you need to become familiar with their main categories and characteristics. When choosing where to buy cucumber seeds, consider the country of origin, manufacturer, and care recommendations for the plants.

When selecting seeds for seedlings, the buyer must first decide between a purebred variety and a hybrid cucumber. Let’s examine their differences.

A variety is obtained as a result of crossing plants of the same species and culture. These plants produce fewer fruits and have a longer maturation period. The yield of such cucumbers is very high-quality but not abundant. This is because cucumber varieties have male flowers in the early stages of development. Another characteristic of varieties is that seeds from the harvested crop are capable of reproduction. The next year, the yield will be identical to the previous one. Popular cucumber varieties include: Elegant, Thumb, Parisian Cornichon, Excellent.

A hybrid is an artificially bred type of cucumber from several varieties. Breeders select varieties with the best characteristics to combine them. Such a harvest has rich flavor, ideal shape, and resistance to diseases. Hybrid cucumbers mature faster and are more resilient, due to the predominance of female flowers. Often, such plants are self-pollinating. However, seeds from harvested hybrids are not recommended to be replanted: their next harvest is unpredictable. Among the best hybrid cucumbers are: Friendly Family F1, Zhytke F1, Garland F1, Wonder Crunch F1, Muraшка F1.

How to plant cucumber seeds

To obtain a high-quality cucumber harvest in the fall, you must put in considerable effort in the spring, during seed planting. Let’s consider the main stages.

1. The best month to plant seeds in the ground is May. Cucumbers are fairly warm-loving plants, so you should avoid the risk of frost. Overall, the soil should warm up to 10-15 degrees.

2. The soil for the seeds should also be prepared. The main condition is its fertility. From the previous season, it should have been well fertilized with compost or mineral fertilizers. Additional soil disinfection will help avoid the appearance of harmful fungi and microorganisms.

3. Prepare the rows. When planting cucumbers in rows, they grow and develop well. The distance between rows should be up to half a meter, and between plants — 20 cm.

4. Determine the viability of each seed. This can be done with a manganese solution: soak the seeds in it for 20 minutes. Those that float are not viable.

5. One day before planting, soak the cucumber seeds in a nutrient solution in a warm place.

6. Choose the method of planting seeds: they can be planted in open or closed ground. Closed ground implies growing seedlings in greenhouses for 25 days. In open ground, you can plant seeds without prior soaking to a depth of 5 cm.

7. Each variety requires an individual approach and care. But with the correct sequence of actions, you will get a delicious harvest of crunchy cucumbers.
