Paraproctitis: Features and Treatment of the Disease

Paraproctitis is a condition characterized by purulent inflammation of tissues around the rectum. It causes numerous inconveniences and painful sensations. An experienced proctologist in Kyiv can help resolve the issue.

Causes and Symptoms of the Disease

The development of the disease is triggered by an infection caused by staphylococci or intestinal bacteria. It enters external tissues from the rectum and penetrates into microcracks. This leads to an inflammatory process.
Medical professionals consider the following causes of paraproctitis:

  • Disorders in the digestive system;

  • Sedentary lifestyle;

  • Weakened immunity;

  • Unconventional sexual practices;

  • Violations of personal hygiene rules;

  • Diseases and injuries in the anal area.

Acute paraproctitis presents with a clearly defined clinical picture:

  • Pain upon touching the affected area;

  • Elevated body temperature;

  • Painful defecation;

  • Pain during urination;

  • Pulling pain in the lower abdomen.

There is also a chronic form of the disease. In this case, symptoms are less noticeable. However, patients experience pain in the anal region, which intensifies during toilet visits.
As practice shows, most people tend to endure unpleasant symptoms for a long time due to the delicacy of the issue. However, timely consultation with a proctologist will help successfully treat the disease and avoid negative consequences.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The diagnosis of paraproctitis is made by a proctologist based on rectal palpation. If the disease is detected promptly in its acute form, the chances of complete recovery after surgery are very high. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon opens the pus-filled area, cleans it, and eliminates the infection.
Surgical intervention is stressful for the body. Afterward, antibiotic and general strengthening therapy is recommended. During rehabilitation, patients must strictly maintain hygiene after each toilet visit.
If acute paraproctitis is treated only with surgical intervention, then how to get rid of chronic paraproctitis? This is significantly more difficult, as at this stage, a fistula forms through which pus is discharged. Treatment is performed using a carbon dioxide laser. It acts exclusively on affected tissues, making the procedure minimally invasive and with low blood loss. To reduce pain, a special cooling gel is applied to the laser-treated areas, which provides an analgesic effect. The rehabilitation period is short, lasting only a couple of days.
