The snakebark maple (Acer capillipes) is a deciduous tree species belonging to the Sapindaceae family. Native to the mountain forests of Japan, this tree is highly prized in horticulture for its distinct ornamental features. Its most remarkable trait is the smooth, green bark marked with vertical white striations, which earns it the common name of snakebark maple.
Botanically, this species typically reaches a height of 10 to 12 meters with a wide, spreading canopy. The leaves are three-lobed and offer seasonal color interest: they emerge with a reddish tint in spring, mature to a deep green in summer, and transform into vibrant shades of orange and red during the autumn season. The plant produces long, drooping racemes of small yellow-green flowers in late spring.
To cultivate Acer capillipes successfully, one must provide a fertile, well-draining soil with an acidic to neutral pH. The tree prefers a site with partial shade, especially in warmer climates, as excessive direct sunlight can damage the sensitive bark. It requires consistent moisture, although it does not tolerate waterlogged ground, which can lead to root rot.
Agronomic management includes regular watering during dry spells and applying organic mulch to preserve soil moisture and protect the root system. Annual fertilization with a balanced, slow-release compound helps maintain vigorous growth. Pruning should be kept to a minimum; it is best performed in the late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased branches before the sap begins to flow.
