Komachi maple

The Komachi maple (Acer micranthum) is a deciduous tree or large shrub belonging to the Sapindaceae family. Native to the mountainous forests of Japan, it is widely recognized for its graceful, multi-stemmed habit and its stunning foliage display, which shifts to brilliant shades of crimson and orange during the autumn months.

Botanically, the tree is distinguished by its small, dainty flowers that hang in slender racemes, giving the species its Latin name meaning 'small-flowered'. Its leaves are five-lobed with fine, double-toothed edges, bearing a strong resemblance to the more common Japanese maple. The bark often develops attractive longitudinal striations as the tree matures.

In terms of climate requirements, this species thrives in temperate regions with cool, moist conditions. It performs best when shielded from harsh, drying winds and direct, intense sunlight. The ideal site for planting should provide partial shade, particularly in climates where summer temperatures frequently climb above 25°C.

Successful cultivation requires a well-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Proper irrigation is paramount, especially during the first two to three years of establishment. Gardeners should ensure the root zone remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, as the tree is susceptible to root rot in compacted or heavy clay soils.
