Blunt-leaved maple

The blunt-leaved maple (Acer obtusifolium) is a distinct species belonging to the Sapindaceae family. In its natural habitat, it manifests as a hardy deciduous shrub or a small-sized tree. It is particularly valued for its resilience to harsh environmental conditions and its dense, attractive foliage, which distinguishes it from many other maple varieties grown in temperate regions.

The species is native to the Eastern Mediterranean region, specifically found in countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, and Cyprus. It thrives in rugged mountainous terrains and rocky slopes where moisture availability can be inconsistent. This geographic origin has endowed the species with remarkable drought tolerance, making it an excellent candidate for regions with similar climate profiles.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its thick, leathery leaves with blunt, rounded lobes, which effectively reduce water loss through transpiration. The bark of younger stems often displays a reddish tint, maturing into a darker gray-brown. Cultivation of Acer obtusifolium requires a location with full sun exposure and soil that provides excellent drainage. While it is not demanding regarding soil fertility, it is highly sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which must be avoided to maintain root health.
