The five-lobed maple (Latin Acer pentaphyllum) is a rare and distinctively elegant tree belonging to the family Sapindaceae. This species is highly prized among arborists and plant collectors for its unique, palmately compound leaves, which clearly differentiate it from the standard broad-leaved maple varieties commonly found in temperate zones.
Originating from the Sichuan province in China, this maple is endemic to a very narrow geographic range. In its natural habitat, it thrives in mountainous terrain, typically on slopes that provide excellent drainage and humid microclimates. Due to habitat loss, it is currently categorized as a rare and endangered species in its native range.
Botanically, Acer pentaphyllum can reach a height of approximately 10 meters. Its foliage is the primary aesthetic feature, consisting of five distinct lanceolate leaflets that emerge in spring. The tree produces small, unremarkable yellowish-green flowers followed by typical samaras, which serve as the primary means of seed dispersal in nature.
In terms of agricultural requirements, this species demands well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH. It performs best in sheltered locations that offer protection from harsh winds and intense direct afternoon sun. Regular irrigation is necessary during dry spells to maintain soil moisture, though over-saturation should be avoided at all costs to prevent root rot.
