The native range of the species covers central and southern Europe, extending into western Asia. Due to its adaptability, it has been introduced to various temperate regions globally. It thrives in cool, moist climates and is well-regarded for its tolerance to exposed coastal sites and high winds, making it a robust choice for reforestation and windbreaks.

Botanically, the sycamore is defined by its five-lobed leaves that resemble those of the plane tree, hence the specific epithet pseudoplatanus.
