Chinese evergreen maple

The Chinese evergreen maple (Acer sino-oblongum) is a distinctive species within the Sapindaceae family, celebrated for its unique evergreen foliage. Unlike the typical deciduous maples familiar to most gardeners, this species maintains its glossy, lanceolate leaves throughout the year, offering year-round ornamental interest.

The native habitat of this maple is primarily found in the mountain forests of Southern China, specifically within Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces. It thrives in regions characterized by temperate, humid conditions and moderate altitudes, where it occupies niches within dense forest understories or along sheltered hillsides.

Morphologically, Acer sino-oblongum is a medium-sized tree that can reach heights of up to 15 meters in optimal conditions. The foliage is simple, entire, and leathery, providing a distinct appearance compared to the lobed leaves of other maples. The tree produces samaras that typically ripen in late autumn, dispersing seeds effectively in its native climate.

Cultivation of this species requires careful site selection. It performs best in partial shade, protected from intense afternoon sun and desiccating winds. The soil should be acidic, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. As an evergreen, it is less tolerant of severe frost than temperate deciduous maples and requires winter protection when young.

In landscaping, it is used as a specimen tree or in botanical displays. Maintenance involves regular watering during dry spells and monitoring for pests such as scale insects or aphids. Diseases such as leaf spot or root rot may occur if soil drainage is inadequate or if the tree is subjected to excessive humidity without proper air circulation.
