The plant originates from the subtropical provinces of China, where it thrives in moist, forest-covered environments. Its natural range is concentrated in areas with mild climates and abundant rainfall. Today, it is commercially farmed in various parts of East and Southeast Asia, where specialized plantations are managed for the regular harvesting of its shoots.
Botanically, it forms dense clusters of woody stems arising from a spreading rhizome system. The leaves are typically lanceolate and vibrant green, optimized for rapid canopy development.
