Native to China, this species has been successfully naturalized in various temperate and subtropical regions worldwide, including New Zealand, Chile, and the Mediterranean basin. It thrives in areas with a long, frost-free growing season. Successful cultivation depends heavily on local climate conditions, specifically avoiding extreme winter temperatures that could damage the vines.
The plant is dioecious, meaning separate male and female plants are necessary for fruit production to occur. Growers typically ensure a specific ratio of male to female plants to guarantee effective pollination by bees or wind. Botanically, the fruit is a berry with a fibrous, fuzzy exterior and vibrant green flesh filled with small, edible black seeds, known for its high vitamin C content.
Regarding cultivation requirements, Actinidia deliciosa prefers deep, well-draining, and fertile soils with a slightly acidic pH.
