Bermuda maidenhair fern

Bermuda maidenhair fern (Adiantum bellum) is a delicate herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Pteridaceae family. It is widely recognized in horticultural circles for its elegant, lacy foliage and small stature, making it a popular choice for specialized indoor plant collections.

The species originates from the Bermuda Islands, where it thrives in its natural habitat among limestone rocks and crevices. This unique origin dictates its specific horticultural requirements, as it prefers well-draining, calcareous substrates that mimic the soil chemistry of its native island environment.

Botanically, the plant features creeping rhizomes and slender, dark-colored petioles that support small, fan-shaped leaflets. Unlike larger ferns, this species is relatively slow-growing and remains compact, typically reaching only a few inches in height, which allows for versatile use in greenhouse environments or terrariums.

The agrotechnical requirements for Adiantum bellum include a high-humidity environment and stable ambient temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 24°C. The soil must be kept consistently moist but never waterlogged, as the root system is highly sensitive to hypoxia. Regular, light misting is recommended to maintain the plant's health.

The primary use of this culture is ornamental. While generally resilient, it can be susceptible to pests such as spider mites and scale insects if the environment becomes too dry.
