Jointed goatgrass (lat. Aegilops cylindrica) is an annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. In agronomy, this plant is recognized as a significant weed of winter wheat, often difficult to manage due to its close taxonomic relationship with the cultivated cereal crop, which complicates the use of selective herbicides.
Originally native to Southern and Central Asia, jointed goatgrass has become a widespread invasive weed in many parts of the world, particularly in North America and Europe. It thrives in regions with winter precipitation patterns, which align perfectly with its germination requirements, allowing it to establish dense populations in wheat-growing areas.
The plant is characterized by slender stems that can grow up to 60 cm in height and a distinct cylindrical spike that breaks into segments at maturity. These segments, or joints, each contain one or more seeds. The seeds exhibit dormancy, which allows them to remain viable in the soil for several years, making long-term weed control a challenging endeavor for farmers.
Aegilops cylindrica is highly adaptable and can grow in various soil types, ranging from sandy to clay-rich environments. It is drought-tolerant and competitive in cool temperatures. Effective control requires an integrated approach, including long-term crop rotation with broad-leaf species, mechanical cultivation before planting, and rigorous inspection of seed lots to prevent the spread of contamination.
The economic impact of jointed goatgrass is substantial, as it significantly reduces wheat yields by competing for essential nutrients, light, and water. Furthermore, it serves as a primary host for numerous agricultural pathogens and pests:
