Tausch's goatgrass (lat. Aegilops tauschii) is an annual grass species in the family Poaceae. It is globally recognized in agricultural science as the primary wild progenitor that contributed the D-genome to modern hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), making it one of the most critical genetic resources for global food security.

The natural distribution of this species spans across Western and Central Asia, including parts of the Caucasus, Iran, and China. It is highly adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, thriving in rocky soils and disturbed habitats where other crops might fail. This adaptability is largely attributed to its unique physiological mechanisms for drought and cold tolerance.

Botanically, the plant features slender culms and narrow, rough leaves. Its most distinctive characteristic is the cylindrical spike that disarticulates upon maturity, facilitating seed dispersal through wind and animals.
