It is typically found in humid, sheltered forest habitats where specific host species are available. Because of its reliance on a host, its distribution is highly patchy and closely linked to the presence of compatible vegetation.

The plant's root system consists of haustoria, which are invasive organs that penetrate the root tissues of host plants.
