Alpine goutweed (lat. Aegopodium alpestre) is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Apiaceae family. Native to the mountainous regions of Eurasia, including East Asia and parts of Siberia, this plant is well-adapted to high-altitude climates. It is characterized by its resilience and ability to form dense patches, making it a distinct botanical entity compared to its more common relative, the standard goutweed.
The plant features a strong, creeping rhizome system that supports vigorous growth. Its stems are hollow and grooved, typically growing between 30 and 80 centimeters in height. The foliage consists of compound leaves with serrated margins, which serve as the primary harvested product. During the summer, it produces white flowers organized in complex umbels, which are characteristic of its taxonomic family.
From an agronomical perspective, Alpine goutweed thrives in nutrient-rich, moist, and well-drained soils.
