African locust-bean

The African locust-bean (Parkia biglobosa) is a perennial tree species belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is a critical multipurpose crop in West and Central Africa, providing essential food resources, environmental stabilization, and medicinal materials. The tree is highly valued for its ability to thrive in poor soils and semi-arid conditions where other crops may struggle.

The native range of this tree spans the African savannah belt, extending from Senegal to Uganda. While it is often found growing wild, it is an integral part of traditional agroforestry systems. Farmers purposefully conserve these trees on their land because they provide shade, mulch, and yield valuable seeds that are harvested as a sustainable source of income and nutrition.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by a height of up to 30 meters, feathery foliage, and large, distinctive globular flower heads that are pollinated by bats and insects. The fruit consists of long, woody pods containing dark, oil-rich seeds embedded in a sweet, mealy yellow pulp. This pulp is edible, and the seeds serve as the primary ingredient for fermented food products.

Agricultural requirements for the African locust-bean focus on early-stage management. The tree is drought-tolerant once established, thanks to its deep taproot system. It prefers well-drained, deep soils. In a cultivation setting, young seedlings need protection from fire and livestock grazing during their first few years of growth, as they are slow-growing compared to other tropical fruit trees.
