Afrormosia elata

Description

Afrormosia (scientific name Afrormosia elata, also classified as Pericopsis elata) is a majestic tropical tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is globally recognized in the forestry and timber industries as one of the most valuable sources of durable, high-density wood, often referred to commercially as African teak.

The tree is native to the tropical forests of Central and West Africa. Its natural habitat spans countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It thrives in humid, semi-deciduous forest environments, where it serves as a significant biological component of the local ecosystem canopy.

Botanically, Afrormosia elata is characterized by its large size and straight, cylindrical trunk, which is highly desirable for logging purposes. The bark often peels away to reveal lighter-colored patches. The foliage consists of pinnate leaves, and the fruit is a flattened pod. The species is known for its slow growth rate, requiring decades to reach maturity in the wild.

Regarding agrotechnology and forestry, the species is challenging to cultivate due to its sensitivity to soil quality and microclimate requirements. It necessitates fertile, well-drained soils and high humidity. Because of its long maturation period, sustainable forest management practices are vital to ensure the survival of the species while maintaining periodic timber yields.

The timber is extensively used in high-end joinery, shipbuilding, and luxury furniture manufacturing because of its excellent dimensional stability and resistance to pests and fungal decay. However, due to overexploitation and deforestation in its native regions, Afrormosia elata is listed in CITES Appendix II, mandating strict international trade controls to prevent its extinction.
