The natural range of this species is primarily limited to the islands of the Sebastian Vizcaino Bay and coastal regions of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. The plant has evolved to thrive in rocky, nutrient-poor soils and withstand intense coastal winds, resulting in a highly resilient and hardy biological structure.
Botanically, the crop consists of a dense rosette of fleshy, grey-green leaves that can grow quite large.
