Sea bent (Agropogon littoralis) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This plant is a unique natural intergeneric hybrid resulting from the cross between the genera Agrostis and Polypogon. As a specialized halophytic grass, it has evolved to thrive in environments that would prove challenging for many other agricultural forage crops.
Its natural range is primarily restricted to the coastal regions of Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The species is most commonly found in salt marshes, sandy dunes, and estuarine areas. This adaptation allows it to colonize saline habitats where constant exposure to wind and fluctuating water salinity levels are the defining environmental factors.
Botanically, Sea bent typically forms small, loose tufts with slender stems reaching heights between 20 and 50 cm. The leaves are narrow, often exhibiting a glaucous or greyish-green color, which serves as a physiological adaptation to mitigate osmotic stress. The inflorescence is a panicle that displays intermediate characteristics, combining the delicate spikelets of the parent species.
From an agronomic perspective, this crop requires well-drained, sandy soils with moderate moisture content. While it is highly tolerant of saline conditions, it does not thrive in completely stagnant water. Cultivation techniques focus on maintaining soil salinity balance and providing adequate sunlight. It is essential to manage the nutrient levels in the soil to ensure healthy biomass production, especially in reclamation projects.

In some regions, it is used as a pioneer species in revegetation efforts for degraded salt-affected lands.
