Cloud grass

Cloud grass (Agrostis nebulosa) is a delicate annual ornamental grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized for its ethereal appearance, producing fine, airy panicles that resemble a misty cloud, which makes it a standout feature in any ornamental garden setting.

The species is native to Southwestern Europe, particularly the Iberian Peninsula. Over time, it has been cultivated across various temperate regions worldwide. Its popularity as a decorative crop stems from its unique structural quality, which allows it to thrive in both garden landscapes and professional cut-flower production.

Botanically, the plant grows to a height of approximately 30–50 cm. It features slender, grassy foliage, but the main attraction is its extremely branched, spikelet-bearing panicles. These structures are notably fragile and elegant, swaying gracefully with the wind, which is why it is colloquially known as "cloud grass."

Regarding cultivation requirements, Cloud grass prefers full sun and well-drained, sandy or light soil. It is an undemanding plant but is sensitive to poor drainage. Excessive soil moisture or high levels of fertilizer can cause the stems to become weak and prone to lodging. Direct sowing in early spring is the standard method of propagation.

In terms of agricultural and commercial use, the primary focus is the ornamental sector. It is highly valued in the dried flower industry because its delicate panicles retain their form and silvery-white appearance after drying. In landscaping, it serves as an excellent filler, softening the appearance of coarser plants in mixed borders.

Common pests and diseases include:

• Rust fungus, often triggered by dense planting and limited air circulation.
• Root rot caused by poor soil drainage and waterlogging.
• Cereal aphids, which may infest the plant during dry, warm spells.
