Elegant hair grass (Latin: Aira elegantissima) is an annual ornamental grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized in the horticultural industry for its exceptionally fine, delicate texture, which brings a light, airy aesthetic to any garden setting.

The species is native to the Mediterranean region and Southern Europe. It thrives in temperate climates, naturally occurring in open, sunny habitats with rocky or sandy substrates. Due to its Mediterranean origins, it is well-adapted to areas with dry, warm growing seasons.

Botanically, it is a low-growing grass, typically reaching 20–40 cm in height. Its most distinctive feature is the inflorescence: a large, spreading panicle composed of numerous tiny, silver-toned spikelets. This structure gives the plant an ethereal appearance, often compared to a shimmering mist or veil.

The cultural requirements for Aira elegantissima focus on excellent drainage and sunlight. It performs best in poor to moderately fertile, sandy soils. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions and prefers a site where air circulation is abundant, as this prevents fungal issues.
