Description
Early hair-grass (Aira praecox L.) is a small annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its distinctively early growth cycle, it is classified as a botanical ephemeral, meaning it completes its life cycle very quickly during the early spring months when environmental conditions are optimal.
The native range of this species extends across Western and Central Europe. It is primarily found in dry, nutrient-poor, sandy, or stony habitats, such as pastures, heaths, and open rocky ground. Due to its adaptability to harsh, low-fertility soils, it frequently colonizes areas where more demanding crops cannot survive.
Botanically, the plant forms thin, dense tufts with slender, bristle-like leaves. Its most characteristic feature is a tight, spike-like panicle that appears quite early in the season, often shimmering with a silvery-green or pale yellow tint. The stems are typically short, usually not exceeding 20 centimeters in height.
Agricultural management of Aira praecox is minimal, as it is generally considered a wild-growing grass rather than a commercial cultivar. It requires high solar radiation and avoids shaded environments. Farmers usually encounter it on naturalized grassland, where it contributes to the early biomass production cycle before the arrival of late-spring drought.
Regarding pests and diseases, this grass is generally hardy due to its short life cycle, which allows it to escape the peak season of many pathogens. However, like other Poaceae, it can be susceptible to rusts and minor fungal leaf spots under humid conditions, although such occurrences are rare in its typical dry habitat. It is mainly valued for ecological site restoration and pasture biodiversity.
