Pacific chrysanthemums

Ajania pacifica, commonly known as the Pacific chrysanthemum, is an attractive perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Historically linked to the genus Chrysanthemum, it is highly valued by gardeners for its distinct silver-variegated foliage and unique autumn blooms.

Native to the coastal regions of Japan, this plant has evolved to withstand harsh seaside conditions. Its natural habitat includes rocky slopes and coastal cliffs, which explains its preference for well-draining soil and excellent tolerance to wind and mild drought.

Botanically, it forms compact, mound-like bushes, typically reaching 10 to 12 inches in height. The foliage is the primary aesthetic draw: dark green leaves with a striking silver-white margin. The late-season flowers are small, golden-yellow button-like heads that lack traditional petals.

Regarding agricultural requirements, Ajania pacifica demands a sunny location with porous soil. It is highly susceptible to root rot if placed in heavy, waterlogged clay, so planting in gravel-based substrates or adding sand is highly recommended for survival and health.

In landscaping, this plant is primarily used as a groundcover or a border edging. It requires very little maintenance, though it should be protected from excessive winter moisture. While it is generally pest-resistant, gardeners should monitor for signs of aphids or powdery mildew during unusually humid summers.
