Alpine lady's mantle (Alchemilla alpina) is a hardy herbaceous perennial belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, including the Alps, the Pyrenees, and parts of Greenland. It is widely cultivated for its unique foliage and its ability to thrive in challenging, high-altitude environmental conditions.
The plant is defined by its basal rosettes of palmate leaves, which are divided into five to seven leaflets. A distinctive botanical feature is the silky, silvery pubescence on the underside of the leaves, which creates a shimmering effect against the dark green upper surfaces. Its inflorescences consist of small, star-shaped yellow-green flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer.
Cultivation requirements focus on well-draining soil, as this species is highly susceptible to root rot if waterlogged. It performs best in rocky, gritty, or slightly acidic soils that mimic its natural mountain habitat. While it is hardy in many climates, it thrives in cooler, temperate zones and requires plenty of light, although it can tolerate partial shade in hot summer conditions.
The agricultural management of Alchemilla alpina includes moderate irrigation during extended drought and the removal of dead foliage in the early spring to promote vigorous new growth.
