Description
Alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus), formerly classified as Rhamnus frangula, is a perennial shrub belonging to the Rhamnaceae family. This species is native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, typically inhabiting damp forests, wetlands, and hedgerows. It serves as a significant botanical resource for the pharmaceutical industry and has ecological value in reforestation programs.
Botanically, it is a deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 3 to 5 meters. Its bark is dark brown, smooth, and easily identified by the presence of prominent horizontal lenticels. The leaves are alternate, ovate, and have smooth margins. The plant produces small, white, hermaphroditic flowers followed by berries that transition from green to red and finally to black when fully ripe; these berries are known for their purgative properties.
Regarding cultivation, Alder buckthorn is highly adaptable but thrives best in fertile, slightly acidic, and moist soils. It is remarkably hardy, tolerating low temperatures and poor drainage better than many other woody plants. While it exhibits good shade tolerance, plants grown in partial sun tend to produce a more compact and vigorous structure, which is beneficial for controlled harvesting of the bark.
The primary economic value of this crop lies in its bark, which is harvested for medical use. The bark contains anthraquinones that act as an effective laxative. Agricultural management for bark production involves selective harvesting during the spring sap-flow period. Following harvest, the raw material must be cured for at least a year or artificially heat-treated to ensure the oxidation of fresh compounds, which reduces their irritant effects.
Typical plant health issues include leaf spot diseases and rust fungi, which often manifest in conditions of poor air circulation. Pests such as aphids and leaf-eating beetles can damage the foliage if not monitored. Agricultural maintenance includes regular pruning to improve stand aeration, weed control around the base of the shrubs, and careful moisture management to prevent root rot in overly saturated substrates.
