It survives by attaching its specialized root structures, known as haustoria, directly to the roots of various host plants to extract water and essential nutrients.
The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa. Its geographical distribution is primarily focused in Eastern and Southern African countries, where it frequently infests fields planted with legumes and cereals. Its ability to thrive in these regions poses a major constraint to local food security and agricultural productivity.
Botanically, Alectra kirkii is characterized by a low chlorophyll content and small, scale-like leaves. Its reproductive cycle is highly efficient, producing numerous tiny seeds that can persist in the soil for long periods until the presence of a compatible host plant triggers germination.
