The Tung tree (Aleurites fordii Hemsl.) is a valuable perennial woody oilseed crop belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. This deciduous tree typically reaches heights of 5 to 10 meters and features a wide, spreading crown. It is primarily cultivated for its seeds, which are rich in a unique, fast-drying fatty oil known as tung oil.

Native to Central and Western China, the tree has been introduced to various subtropical regions across the globe. Commercial cultivation is primarily concentrated in areas with mild winters, such as parts of the United States, Argentina, Brazil, and regions along the Black Sea coast, where the climate supports its growth and high oil yield.

Botanically, the tree is characterized by large, heart-shaped leaves and showy white or pinkish flowers with purple veins. Its fruit is a drupe containing several seeds. The Tung tree is noted for its rapid growth rate, often beginning to bear fruit as early as three to four years after planting, making it an efficient crop for industrial plantation management.

Cultivation requirements for the Tung tree are specific: it thrives in warm, humid subtropical climates but possesses moderate cold hardiness during its dormant phase. It requires deep, fertile, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic pH. Growers must avoid limestone-rich soils, which can induce chlorosis, and waterlogged areas, which damage the root system.

Because of its exceptional drying, water-resistant, and chemically stable properties, tung oil is highly sought after in the paint and varnish industry.
