Stringybark she-oak

Stringybark she-oak (Allocasuarina inophloia) is an evergreen tree species belonging to the family Casuarinaceae. It is distinguished by its unique bark, which peels away in long, thick, fibrous strips as the tree matures, giving it the characteristic look that inspired its common name, Stringybark she-oak.

The species is endemic to Australia, occurring naturally in the dry woodlands of Queensland and New South Wales. It thrives in harsh environments, often colonizing sandy, stony, or nutrient-poor soils where moisture availability is inconsistent, reflecting its high adaptability to the challenging climate of the Australian interior.

Botanically, the tree is recognized for its specialized morphology, featuring needle-like branchlets that perform photosynthesis, while the actual leaves are reduced to minute scales arranged in whorls. Allocasuarina inophloia typically reaches heights of up to 10 meters, producing woody, cone-like structures that house its seeds after flowering.

Regarding agrotechnical requirements, this species demands excellent soil drainage to prevent root rot. It is exceptionally well-suited to poor soils and requires very little maintenance once established. It is intolerant of heavy, waterlogged clay soils, preferring the open, porous conditions of its native habitat. No specialized fertilization is typically needed due to its symbiotic nitrogen-fixing capabilities.
