Alluaudia procera, commonly known as the Madagascar ocotillo, is a striking succulent tree belonging to the Didiereaceae family. This plant is renowned for its architectural, vertical growth pattern, which makes it a standout specimen in xeriscaping and arid plant collections worldwide.

Native exclusively to the island of Madagascar, specifically the southern and southwestern thorn forests, this species has evolved in one of the most challenging environments on Earth. Its survival strategy relies on extreme drought tolerance and the ability to maximize photosynthesis during short, infrequent rainy seasons.

Botanically, Alluaudia procera features tall, slender stems protected by formidable, sharp spines arranged in spirals. The plant is deciduous; it produces small, green, heart-shaped leaves along its stems during the wet season, which drop off immediately as water becomes scarce to minimize water loss through transpiration.

Cultivation requires adherence to strict agrotechnical principles, specifically focusing on drainage. The soil must be highly porous, consisting mainly of mineral components like coarse sand, gravel, and pumice. It thrives in high-light environments and requires a marked dormant period in winter, during which water application should be reduced to almost zero.

Economically and horticulturally, it is utilized as an ornamental plant in greenhouses and arid-climate gardens. While generally robust, it is susceptible to specific pests, including scale insects and spider mites. Overwatering remains the most significant threat to the plant's health, often leading to rapid root rot that can be fatal if not addressed immediately.
