Lemon verbena (lat. Aloysia citriodora) is a perennial deciduous shrub belonging to the Verbenaceae family. It is globally recognized for its potent, fresh lemon-like scent, derived from the essential oils stored in its narrow, lanceolate leaves. It can grow up to several meters in tropical conditions, but is smaller in temperate latitudes.
Originally native to South America, specifically Argentina, Chile, and Peru, this plant thrives in warm climates with long, sunny growing seasons. It is highly sensitive to frost, which limits its commercial cultivation to regions with mild winters or requires greenhouse protection during the colder months.
Botanically, it is characterized by its whorled leaves and tiny, pale flowers arranged in spike-like inflorescences. For optimal growth, it requires well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. The plant performs best in full sun, which maximizes the concentration of volatile oils within its foliage.
The agronomic management involves regular irrigation during the peak growth season, though the soil must never remain waterlogged to prevent root diseases. Pruning is essential for maintaining the bush shape and promoting vegetative growth. Propagation is predominantly achieved through stem cuttings rather than seeds, as the latter often exhibit poor viability.
