Sand amaranth (Amaranthus arenicola) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. The species is native to the central and southern regions of North America. It has successfully colonized various ecological niches, particularly focusing on sandy and disturbed soils. Its rapid expansion is attributed to its ability to produce vast quantities of resilient seeds that can remain viable in the soil profile for extended periods, complicating long-term weed management strategies.

The plant is susceptible to common agricultural pests, including various species of aphids and beetles, as well as fungal diseases such as white mold under high humidity, which can affect its overall vigor and reproductive capacity.
