Description
Yellow Amaranth (Amaranthus flavus) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. It is recognized for its vibrant yellow inflorescences and high biomass production potential, positioning it as an important candidate for forage, food, and industrial applications.
The plant originates from tropical regions of the Americas. Over time, it has spread to various climates, demonstrating excellent adaptability. Its cultivation is currently focused on regions with warm, long summers where it can maximize its physiological potential and produce substantial seed and leaf yields.
Botanically, it features a sturdy stem, often exceeding 1.5 meters, and large, nutrient-rich leaves. The deep taproot system allows it to access water reserves that are unreachable by many other shallow-rooted crops, effectively mitigating the risks associated with dry spells during the growing season.
Regarding cultivation, the crop thrives in well-drained, fertile soils with a neutral pH. Proper agrotechnical management involves sowing during the warm season when soil temperatures remain consistently above 15°C. Weed control is critical during the initial growth stages, as competition can significantly reduce the potential biomass harvest.
