Burrobush (Latin: Ambrosia dumosa) is a perennial shrub that belongs to the Asteraceae family. Unlike its invasive relatives, this species is a vital component of the desert vegetation in North America, perfectly evolved to survive in some of the most arid environments on the planet.

The plant is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Its natural habitat includes the Mojave, Sonoran, and Colorado deserts. It thrives in regions characterized by intense heat, high solar radiation, and minimal annual precipitation, functioning as a primary producer in these harsh landscapes.

Botanically, it is a rounded, woody shrub growing up to 60 centimeters in height. The foliage is covered with fine, white-gray hairs that provide a reflective surface to mitigate heat stress and reduce water loss through transpiration. During severe droughts, the plant may drop its leaves to enter a state of dormancy.

Regarding growing requirements, the burrobush is strictly adapted to well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils. It requires full sun exposure and is highly sensitive to waterlogging. Cultivation is generally not practiced for agricultural production, but it is often studied for its resilience in soil stabilization and xeriscaping projects.
