Unlike its more aggressive weedy relatives, this species is cultivated primarily for its secondary metabolites, which include specific sesquiterpene lactones that exhibit significant biological activity in pharmaceutical applications.
The plant originates from the coastal regions of the Mediterranean and North Africa. It is naturally adapted to sandy soils and saline coastal environments. Due to these specific requirements, large-scale cultivation is restricted to coastal areas with mild maritime climates where the risk of frost is minimal and sunlight exposure is maximized throughout the growing season.
Botanically, sea ambrosia is a branched subshrub reaching a height of 50–70 cm. The leaves are deeply lobed and covered with fine hairs, an adaptation that reduces water loss in high-temperature environments. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers arranged in spikes. The root system is deep and extensive, allowing the plant to thrive in nutrient-poor, well-draining substrates.
Agricultural requirements focus on providing full sun exposure and sandy, well-drained soil. The plant is drought-tolerant once established but requires consistent light irrigation during the initial growth stages. Over-fertilization is discouraged as it often diminishes the concentration of valuable essential oils and medicinal compounds stored in the plant tissues.
The main agricultural use of this plant is as a source of raw material for the production of herbal medicines with anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Pest management involves monitoring for aphids and spider mites, especially in greenhouse conditions. Proper sanitation and crop rotation are essential to prevent the accumulation of soil-borne fungi that often target members of the Asteraceae family.
