Common hackberry (Celtis occidentalis L.) is a deciduous tree belonging to the Cannabaceae family. It is a large, hardy species known for its adaptability to a wide range of soil conditions and climatic extremes, making it a versatile choice for both urban forestry and rural landscapes.

Native to North America, the species thrives in diverse habitats ranging from river floodplains to dry, upland sites. Due to its robust nature, it has been introduced globally, proving highly effective in restoring disturbed landscapes and acting as a reliable street tree in cities where air quality and heat tolerance are significant concerns.

Botanically, the tree is recognized by its distinctive, corky, ridge-and-furrow bark that develops as the tree matures. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate with a serrated margin. The fruit is a small, fleshy drupe that turns dark orange or purple upon ripening, providing an essential food source for wildlife, particularly birds, during the late autumn months.

Regarding cultivation requirements, the common hackberry is relatively low-maintenance. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. While it prefers moist, well-drained, alkaline soils, it is remarkably tolerant of poor soils, soil compaction, and periodic drought. Regular pruning during early development is recommended to ensure a strong, central leader and well-spaced branches.
