As a wetland-adapted species, it thrives in waterlogged conditions, frequently appearing along the margins of rivers, ponds, and in agricultural landscapes such as irrigated rice paddies, where it functions as a specialized aquatic or semi-aquatic plant.
The species originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. Its natural distribution is largely determined by the availability of high-moisture environments and a warm, stable climate. Over time, it has spread to various regions where agricultural irrigation systems mimic its preferred natural habitat, allowing it to establish significant populations.
Botanically, it is distinguished by its upright stem and whorled leaf arrangement. Its root system is relatively shallow, designed to extract nutrients efficiently from saturated, nutrient-rich soils. The plant produces small, sessile flowers that are typically arranged in axillary clusters, which allows for rapid reproduction in environments with high vegetation density.
Agronomic requirements are focused on moisture management. To achieve optimal growth, the soil must remain consistently saturated but not stagnant, ensuring adequate aeration for root respiration.
