Jointed Anabasis (Latin: Anabasis articulata) is a perennial subshrub belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. It is a highly specialized succulent adapted to harsh desert environments, specifically thriving in saline soils where few other species can establish themselves.
The plant originates from the arid zones of North Africa and the Middle East. It is primarily found in rocky deserts and semi-arid plains, where it plays a critical ecological role in soil stabilization and supporting local livestock grazing patterns during extreme dry seasons.
Botanically, this species is characterized by its articulated, fleshy stems that serve as the primary photosynthetic organs, as the true leaves are highly reduced. This structure minimizes water loss. The root system is robust, often extending deep into the ground to tap into underground water reservoirs.
Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the plant demands well-drained, porous soils. It is a classic halophyte, meaning it actually benefits from saline conditions.
