Long-horned bug orchid

Anacamptis longicornu

Description

Long-horned bug orchid (Anacamptis longicornu) is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Orchidaceae family. While not a commercial crop, this species is highly significant for botanical research, biodiversity conservation, and the study of specialized plant-fungal symbiotic relationships in the Mediterranean region.

The plant originates from the Mediterranean basin, with its range extending across Southern Europe and various islands, including Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily. It thrives in open, sunny locations such as limestone grasslands, meadows, and sparsely wooded areas. It is well-adapted to the mild, wet winters and dry summers characteristic of its native Mediterranean climate.

Botanical features include the formation of two globose tubers that store nutrients during dormancy. The plant typically reaches a height of 10–30 cm and produces a distinctive inflorescence of flowers, each characterized by a long, upward-curving spur. The flower color usually ranges from shades of violet and pink to white, attracting specific insect pollinators.

Agrotechnical requirements for this species are complex, primarily due to its obligate association with mycorrhizal fungi. It prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soils. In cultivation, it is extremely difficult to maintain without a balanced soil microflora. Excessive irrigation or fertilization is detrimental, as the plant has evolved to survive in nutrient-poor, natural soil conditions.

  • Dependence on specific mycorrhizal fungi for growth.
  • Preference for well-drained, lime-rich substrates.
  • Sensitivity to high humidity and waterlogging.
  • Conservation priority due to habitat fragmentation.

The practical use of the plant is centered on biodiversity conservation and ecological studies. Like most wild orchids, it can be susceptible to fungal pathogens if the soil drainage is inadequate. Pests include common meadow insects that may feed on the foliage or inflorescences. Protection of its natural habitats remains the primary method of ensuring the long-term survival of the species.
