Small bugloss

Small bugloss (lat. Anchusa arvensis) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. Known for its distinct bristly texture and bright blue flowers, this species is frequently encountered in agricultural landscapes, often managing to thrive in conditions where other plants might struggle.

The native range of the species covers most of Europe and parts of Western Asia. It typically occupies open fields, fallow lands, and sandy soil habitats. Due to its adaptability to poor nutrient substrates and drought-prone areas, it is considered a hardy plant with significant ecological flexibility.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its stiff, rough hairs covering the stems and leaves, which serve as an adaptation to minimize water loss. The plant typically reaches heights of 15–45 cm and features branching stems with lanceolate leaves. Its inflorescences are distinct scorpioid cymes that unfurl progressively throughout the growing season, producing small but vivid blue flowers.

Regarding cultivation and field management, the plant prefers sunny locations with well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils. In agricultural settings, it is often managed as a weed through regular tillage, spring harrowing, and strict crop rotation patterns to prevent the soil from becoming overloaded with seeds. Proper soil moisture management can significantly limit its aggressive spread.
