Androsace lactea, commonly known as white-flowered rock jasmine, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Primulaceae family. In horticulture, this species is highly regarded for its compact growth habit and its ability to form dense, cushion-like mats, making it an excellent candidate for specialized rock garden landscaping.
The plant originates from the high-altitude mountain ranges of Central Europe, specifically the Alps. Its native habitat consists of limestone screes and rocky crevices, which has influenced its physiology. It is exceptionally well-adapted to survive in nutrient-poor soils and volatile alpine weather conditions, demonstrating significant resilience.
Botanically, Androsace lactea is characterized by narrow, lanceolate leaves forming tight rosettes and small, snow-white flowers with yellow or green centers. These flowers typically bloom in late spring and early summer. The root system is relatively shallow, reflecting its adaptation to narrow rock crevices where moisture levels are sparse but consistent.
Successful cultivation requires specific environmental conditions. It demands sharp drainage and thrives best in gritty, alkaline, or neutral soil. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged soil, particularly during dormant winter months, which can lead to rapid decay of the root collar. Sunny positions with light afternoon shade are generally preferred for optimal growth.
