Androsace villosa, commonly known as hairy rock jasmine, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Primulaceae family. It forms dense, mat-forming cushions covered with fine hairs, which provide the plant with a distinct silver-grey appearance and protect it against harsh mountain environments.
The native distribution covers mountainous regions of Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. In the wild, the plant thrives on rocky slopes, limestone crevices, and dry alpine meadows, where it has evolved to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and nutrient-poor, stony soils.
Botanically, the plant remains quite low-growing, rarely exceeding 5–10 cm in height. Its narrow leaves form tight rosettes. During the flowering phase in late spring and early summer, it produces small umbels of white or light pink flowers, often featuring a yellowish center, which rise slightly above the foliage mat.
Cultivation requirements focus on excellent drainage; Androsace villosa is notoriously sensitive to waterlogged soil, which leads to root rot. A gritty, mineral-rich substrate is essential for success. The plant thrives in full sun and is highly drought-tolerant, requiring very little maintenance once established in an appropriate site.
