Angraecum distichum is a miniature epiphytic orchid belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is widely recognized for its unique vegetative structure, where small, overlapping leaves are arranged in two dense, opposing rows along the stem, giving the plant a distinctive fern-like or tail-like appearance.

The species is native to the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa. Its natural habitat spans regions from Sierra Leone across to Uganda and down into tropical Africa. As an epiphyte, it grows on tree branches in humid, shaded environments where it absorbs nutrients and moisture from the humid air and decomposing debris.

Botanical features of this orchid include its small but fragrant, crystalline white flowers. These bloom from the leaf axils and are known for their sweet, jasmine-like scent that becomes more pronounced during the evening. The root system is quite delicate, requiring excellent air circulation and a fast-draining medium, which is why it is rarely grown in standard potting soil.

Agrotechnical requirements for success include providing high humidity levels, ideally above 70%, and a consistent warm temperature. It requires bright, filtered light; excessive direct sun can scorch the foliage. Proper ventilation is essential, as stagnant air often leads to the rapid development of fungal pathogens and rots in the dense leaf structure.

In terms of agricultural and horticultural use, this species is highly valued by hobbyists and orchid collectors for its compact size and botanical interest. It is a perfect candidate for terrariums and vivariums. Typical pests include spider mites and scale insects, while the most common health issues arise from improper watering—specifically, allowing water to accumulate in the leaf axils, which may lead to crown rot.
