Anisoptera thurifera

Anisoptera thurifera is a large evergreen tree belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family. This species is one of the most important representatives of the tropical forests in Southeast Asia and is highly valued in the forestry industry for the production of high-quality timber, commonly known on the international market as a type of meranti.

The natural range of the species covers the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. The plant prefers humid tropical lowlands and foothill regions, where the climate is characterized by the absence of sharp seasonal temperature fluctuations and high levels of rainfall throughout the year.

Botanically, the species is a giant tree capable of reaching heights of over 50 meters with a powerful, straight trunk clear of branches at significant heights. The leaves are leathery, alternate, and exhibit characteristic venation typical of the family. The fruits are equipped with long wing-like appendages, which facilitate effective seed dispersal by the wind.

For successful growth and regeneration, the tree requires deep, well-drained, and fertile soils with an acidic or neutral pH. Industrial cultivation techniques involve establishing forest plantations that consider proper light management, as young specimens are sensitive to direct sunlight and require shading during the early stages of development.

The economic utility of Anisoptera focuses on timber production. Its wood has medium density, excellent workability, and durability, making it highly sought after for the manufacturing of furniture, interior paneling, flooring, and components for low-rise residential construction.
