The Carpathian cat's-foot (Antennaria carpatica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is native to high-altitude mountain regions, specifically the Carpathians and the Alps, where it has evolved to colonize rocky crevices and nutrient-poor alpine meadows.

Originating from mountain ecosystems, the plant is characterized by its hardy nature and ability to withstand alpine climates. Its natural distribution is restricted to high-elevation areas where the substrate is predominantly mineral-based and well-drained, reflecting its adaptation to specific soil profiles.

Botanically, the plant is recognized by its basal rosettes covered in dense, woolly, whitish hairs. These hairs serve a functional purpose: reflecting excess sunlight and reducing transpiration in thin mountain air. The inflorescences are composed of small, fuzzy flower heads that appear on short stalks during the summer months.

Agricultural and horticultural requirements for this species focus on site selection. It demands full sun exposure and sharp drainage. If planted in rich or stagnant soils, the plant will likely succumb to root rot. Therefore, cultivation in specialized rock garden soil mixes or gravel-heavy substrates is essential for long-term survival.
