Rosy pussytoes (lat. Antennaria rosea) is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known for its ability to form dense, mat-forming colonies, this plant is highly valued as a resilient ground cover in both naturalized landscapes and formal garden settings.

The plant originates from North America, with a broad native range extending through various mountainous and prairie regions. Its evolutionary history in rocky, high-altitude, and arid environments has equipped it with exceptional tolerance to harsh weather conditions, including frost, intense sunlight, and low-nutrient substrates.

Botanically, it is characterized by basal rosettes of silver-grey, pubescent foliage. During its flowering phase, it produces upright stalks topped with distinctive pink to rose-colored flower heads. The foliage remains low to the ground, usually not exceeding a few inches in height, which allows it to thrive in exposed areas where other plants might struggle due to wind exposure.

In terms of cultivation, Antennaria rosea thrives in well-draining, sandy, or rocky soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH levels. Full sun is essential to maintain the tight, compact growth habit; shading will cause the rosettes to stretch and become thin. Supplemental irrigation is only necessary during prolonged dry spells, as established plants are notably drought-tolerant.

Maintaining proper air circulation and adequate drainage remains the most effective prophylactic measure against most biotic threats.
